When it comes to bathroom lighting, there are three
main types of lighting to consider: task lighting, ambient
lighting, and accent lighting. Effective bathroom lighting
considers a combination of each. Task lighting is just
that: functional (task) lighting. This is the lighting we
rely upon to do our grooming. The best type of task lighting
considers the light required to illuminate our faces. Well
placed vertical sconces, or vanity lights, should be mounted
to either side of the mirror to maximize light to the face.
These fixtures should be selected to provide ample lighting;
dimmers are a good choice as you can control the level of
lighting based on personal need.
Ambient lighting is more a general lighting that comes
from a single source. Although this is often a flush mount,
pendants and even small chandeliers, are also good choices
that provide a more decorative touch to the bathroom.
Finally, accent lighting is designed to highlight a
specific aspect of a room, such as a piece of art or tile
work. If you're going for a decorative look in the bathroom,
this can provide an added level of décor and lighting to
your space.
Remember to choose bulbs appropriate for the lighting.
Clean white lighting is best for task lighting. Halogen
lights tend to last much longer than regular incandescent
bulbs.
Your options in bathroom lighting most limitless, but like
lighting any other space in your home, consider both
function and décor in order to make a sound decision before
you purchase.
